Abstract

675,117. Statistical apparatus. POWERS-SAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. Oct. 25, 1950 [Oct. 27, 1949], No. 27623/49. Class 106 (i). In order to extend the capabilities of a record card sorting machine of the type in which two magazines are provided at opposite sides of the machine and a plurality of receivers are disposed between them, means are provided to selectively condition the machine for operation of one or both of the deflectors associated with two sets of receivers, each set of receivers being associated with a particular 281 magazine. In Fig. 1 there is shown diagrammatically a magazine 1 with which are associated receivers 3 and 4 and a magazine 2 with which are associated receivers 5 and 6. Feed rollers 7 and 8 in each case engage the cards as they are fed from the magazines and deflectors 10 and 11 operate to distribute the cards between the receivers 3, 4, and 5, 6, respectively. The cards delivered from the magazine 1 can be received in either of receivers 3 or 4 and the cards delivered from magazine 2 can be delivered into either of the receivers 5 or 6. Each deflector 10, 11 is provided with a flat upper surface 15 which allows the card to pass to the further receiver and a curved undersurface 14 which, when the deflector is raised will deflect the card into the nearer receiver in each case. Movement of the deflector 10 is controlled by rotation of the shaft 12 in a counterclockwise direction by the action of a member 17 engaging a pin 16 secured to the shaft 12. The member 17 is pivoted at 18 to the frame 19 and moves in a clockwise direction to deflect the pin 16 when a protruding portion 24 is engaged by an active pin 25. The pins 25 are mounted in discs 26, 27 mounted on a shaft 29 driven from the main shaft 9. Each pin is arranged to be settable by hand to an active or an inactive position by engaging a spring-loaded detent in one of the two annular grooves 33, 34, groove 33 corresponding to the inactive position and groove 34 the active position. A link 37 is connected as shown in Fig. 1 from one end of the member 17 to a lever 40 secured to the shaft 13 for operation of the shutter 11 simultaneously with shutter 10. If both shutters are not required to work simultaneously the operation of shutter 11 may be stopped by engaging a pin 49, Figs. 1,and 3, in a slot in the end of the link 37 preventing movement of the link, movement of the arm 17 being taken up by a lost-motion device comprising a slot 43 in which a pin 44 may move against the action of a spring 45.
