675,095. Fluid-pressure brakes. SERVO-FREIN DEWANDRE SOC. ANON. Feb. 10, 1949 [Feb. 13, 1948], No. 3649/49. Class 103 (i). In an automatic compressed air brake system for tractor-trailer units, the brake cylinders on the trailer are of the twochamber type normally having compressed air supplied by the trailer auxiliary reservoir 8 to both sides of the pistons 28. Actuation of the brake pedal 30 operates a reaction control valve 4 to release air from the main brake pipe 6. This reduction of pressure is transmitted to the chamber 14 of a relay valve 11 on the trailer, so that its piston 23 moves downwardly owing to the auxiliary reservoir pressure existing in the chamber 17 above it. Downward movement of piston 23 first causes closure of a valve 27 which cuts off the auxiliary reservoir 8 from the brake cylinder discharge chambers 20 and then opens a valve 26 so that the brake cylinder chambers 20 may discharge to atmosphere through central port 25 in the piston 23, the brakes being applied by the full auxiliary reservoir pressure existing in the chambers 17. The trailer brakes will be automatically applied in the event of breakage of the connecting pipe 22. A three-way cock 10 is provided for transmitting by pipe 21 auxiliary reservoir pressure to chamber 14 below the piston 23 in order to release the trailer brakes after such an emergency application.
