Abstract

674,734. Valves. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING-SUPERHEATER, Inc. May 18, 1949 [Jan. 11, 1949], No. 13229/49. Class 135. In a pressure-responsive valve controlling the supply of fuel oil to a furnace or boiler, the valve is automatically closed by temperature - responsive means should the furnace or boiler temperature become abnormally high. As shown, the valve connected by a duct 8, Fig. 1, to a supply pump 7 and by a duct 9, via a solenoid-actuated valve 10, to the burners 6 of a furnace 4, comprises a casing 24 having a valve member 30 connected through a plunger 20 with a a pressure-responsive bellows 21 in a chamber 25. The plunger 20 has an e'ongated slot 47 having shoulders 49, Fig. 2, engageable with stops 48 formed in the stem 41 of a second plunger 39. The plunger 39 is urged to the right by springs 44, 45 and sealingly connected to a bellows 15 in a chamber 14 connected by a line 13 to a thermostatic bulb 12 disposed in the furnace and filled with a vaporisable liquid. In the event of the temperature of the furnace reaching an abnormally high value, the pressure of the vapour acts on the bellows 15 to urge the plunger 39 to the left to disengage the stops 48 from the shoulders 49 whence the pressure of the fuel oil in the chamber 25 urges the plunger 20 downwards and the valve 30 closes. The valve is manually reset by an arm 51. A spring 35 may be fitted within the bellows 21 to raise the plunger 20 when the pump is inoperative. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement wherein pressure-responsive bellows 80, 85, Fig. 3 (Cancelled) subjected to pressure at the inlet and outlet ends respectively of a steam generator unit 70 are connected to a lever 79 to control a valve 63 supplying, through a solenoid-actuated valve 61, fuel oil to the burner 60 of a furnace 59. It is stated that should the furnace temperature reach an abnormally high value the valve 63 closes to shut off the supply of oil to the furnace. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
