Abstract

674,389. Endless conveyers. PANGBORN CORPORATION. April 4, 1950. No. 8416/50. Class 78 (i). [Also in Group XXIII] An endless conveyer 46 for a tumbling barrel consists of two chains driven in step by connected sprockets 54 to support overlapping slats 47 which are deflected by two drums 57 to form a work-receiving trough. A second pair of sprockets 55 allows the tension of the chains to be adjusted, while a third pair 56 is mounted on the ends of arms 71 secured to a shaft 72. During a tumbling operation, the arms occupy the position shown, but. when the work-pieces are to be discharged from the barrel, they are swung about the shaft 72 to a lower position by reversing the direction of travel of the conveyer to cause a displacement of the work. Adjustable stops limit the movement of the arms which are connected by cables 87 to counter-balance weights 94. These cables pass over sheaves 93 of tapered helical formation which decelerate the arms prior to engagement with the stops at each end of their travel. Hails 58 support the conveyer over the works carrying area, while rails 100 hold the chains taut when the arms 71. are in the lower position. To lock the arms in their upper and lower positions, the shaft 72 carries a ratchet wheel (not shown) with two sets of oppositely inclined teeth. One set of teeth co-operates with a pawl during upward movement of the arms. while the other set co-operates with a separate pawl during downward movement. The appropriate pawl is brought into operation manually.
