Abstract
674,302. Switch contacts. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP FABRIEK VAN ELECTRISCHE APPARATEN VOORHEEN F. HAZEMEIJER & CO. July 18, 1950. [July 18, 1949] No. 17935/50. Class 38 (v). A butt contact for a circuit-breaker comprises a number of contact-members 5 connected in parallel and movable longitudinally relatively to one another on engagement by the cooperating contact 2, the ends 1 of the members projecting into a cup-shaped housing 3 containing a medium 4 which converts upward movement of one of members 5 to downward movement of the remaining member(s) in order to increase the contact pressure. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, the members 5 are sector-shaped, are arranged to form a cylinder, are separated by insulation 15 to avoid welding and are connected to a terminal ring 8 by flexible straps 6 and contact fingers 21 which are pressed against the sectors 5 by a circular spring 20, the medium 4 comprising steel balls (as shown), rubber or other deformable material, a liquid, or a compressed gas preferably enclosed in a capsule. The spaces between the steel balls may be filled with oil or graphite. The housing 3 is biased downwards by a spring 12, downward movement of members 5 being limited by the engagement of flanges thereon with a plate 7. The bearing area on the medium 4 of the member 5 first engaged by contact 2 is increased by an insulating pin 14 in a recess formed at the upper end of the members 5. The straps 6 may bear directly against the members 5, the spring 20 being omitted, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 4, the members 5 are of rectangular section, one member 5<SP>1</SP> having a lateral portion 5<SP>11</SP> at its upper end to provide an increased bearing area on medium 4 and its lower end being slightly below the level of the other members so that it is always engaged first bv the contact 2. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a number of individual, spaced members 5 are used.
