Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerized in an aqueous medium containing only vinyl chloride, from 0.3 to 12 per cent by weight based on the vinyl chloride of a water-soluble urea-aldehyde condensation product, a peroxygen compound and, if desired, small quantities of a buffer and/or stabilizing agent. The peroxygen compound may be o1,o-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, dicaproyl peroxide, dibenzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, potassium, sodium or ammonium persulphate, or sodium perborate, percarbonate or perphosphate. The buffer may be sodium bicarbonate, sodium metasilicate, lead acetate or ammonia. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, relates also to the preparation of polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene bromide, styrene, p-chlorostyrene, 3,5-dichlorostyrene, p-methoxy styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, alphachloroacrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methylmethacrylate, butyl ethacrylate, methyl alpha - cyanoacrylate, ethyl alpha - chloroacrylate, methacrylamide, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl pyridine, vinyl carbazole, vinyl methylether, vinyl acetate, benzoate, propionate and butyrate; isobutylene, ethylene, butadiene-1,3, isoprene, chloroprene, 3-cyano-butadiene-1,3, myrcene, vinyl ethynyl diethyl carbinol, di-ethyl maleate, diethyl fumarate, and maleic acid and anhydride.
