Abstract
Vinyl chloride or a monomeric material comprising a major proportion of vinyl chloride is polymerized in a two-phase reaction medium consisting of the monomer, an aqueous solution of acetic acid, and a polymerization catalyst, at a temperature of from 0 DEG to 100 DEG C., the aqueous acetic acid solution containing from 60 to 80 per cent of acetic acid and being present in an amount from 2 to 4.5 times the amount of monomeric material. The catalyst may be a peroxygen catalyst such as o,o1 - dichlorobenzoyl, dibenzoyl, dicaproyl, acetyl benzoyl, hydrogen or silver peroxide, sodium or potassium persulphate or percarbonate, or sodium perborate, or there may be used a combination of a peroxygen catalyst with a reducing agent such as ferrous sulphate or sodium bisulphite. Other monomers which may be present in addition to vinyl chloride are one or more of styrene, p-chlorostyrene, 3,5-dichlorostyrene, p-methoxystyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, alpha - chloro - acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl ethacrylate, methacrylamide, vinyl methyl ether, vinyl acetate, vinyl benzoate, isobutylene and ethylene, together with, if desired, diethyl maleate, diethyl fumarate and maleic acid or anhydride. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 relates also to the polymerization of the above-mentioned vinyl compounds, in the absence of vinyl chloride, and also to the polymerization of vinylidene chloride, butadiene-1,3, isoprene, chloroprene, 3-cyano butadiene-1,3, myrcene, vinyl acetylene and vinyl ethynyl diethyl carbinol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
