Abstract

<PICT:0674044/III/1> <PICT:0674044/III/2> A device for measuring the content of a paramagnetic gas, such as oxygen or nitric oxide in a gaseous mixture, comprises a test cell having a gas passage and a pair of chambers connected therewith each chamber containing an elongated heating element, means being provided for producing a magnetic field around the whole length of one of the heating elements. In operation the paramagnetic gas is attracted towards the strongest part of the magnetic field, that is, towards the centrally placed heating element, thus becoming heated, losing its magnetic attraction, and being replaced by fresh gas. The temperature of the heating element, lowered by the increased gas circulation is compared electrically with that of the element in the comparison chamber, the cooling being proportional to the paramagnetic gas content. According to the preferred embodiment, magnetizable pole pieces 24, Fig. 2, extend the whole length of chamber 18 and, due to their shape form a constriction within the chamber surrounding the centrally placed heater 36. A magnet 28 is pivoted about an axis 32. A companion chamber 20 identical with chamber 18 except that no magnetic field is applied, is provided, the heating elements in the two cells forming adjacent arms of a Wheatstone bridge circuit.
