Abstract

<PICT:0642156/III/1> <PICT:0642156/III/2> A device for determining the amount of a constituent having high magnetic susceptibility in a gas mixture of the kind wherein the gas is locally heated in a magnetic field to induce a flow dependent on the change of susceptibility due to heating, and wherein a response is obtained depending on the flow and on the specific heat of the gas, is provided with correction means to make the response independent of the viscosity and the specific heat. The gas is passed downwardly through the two halves of the annular cell 1A, which are arranged in parallel, and connected by a transverse passage 1A6 carrying a centre-tapped heating winding 1A7 constituting two of the resistances of a Wheatstone bridge. One half (shaded) of this passage is situated in a magnetic field. The attraction into the field of a susceptible gas and its subsequent loss of susceptibility on heating result in a flow through the transverse tube which by differential cooling of the winding 1A7 unbalances the bridge. The gas then passes through the compensating cell 2A, which resembles the first cell but has the transverse tube arranged vertically and has no magnetic field. A convectional current is thus produced in tube 2A6, producing an unbalancing of a second Wheatstone bridge, which is so connected with the first that the net response of the galvanometer G depends only on the magnetic susceptibility. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flow past the compensating winding 2 is produced by passage through a constriction 3 under a constant pressure controlled by regulator 4.
