Abstract

329,986. British Electric Transformer Co., Ltd., and Whish, A. C. Feb. 26, 1929. Thermometers.-A means for measuring the highest temperature of the windings of a transformer or other electrical apparatus comprises a thermometer immersed in the cooling fluid surrounding the apparatus and additionally heated by eddy currents or hysteresis effects or both produced in the material of the thermometer itself or in a mass of magnetic' or non-magnetic conducting material placed adjacent the thermometer and within the magnetic field produced by the transformer current or a current proportional thereto. Figs. 5 and 6 show a constructional arrangement. in which the bulb 1 of the thermometer is made of magnetic material and forms part of a magnetic circuit comprising a U-shaped laminated core 5 magnetized by a winding or conductor 5a carrying the transformer current. The thermometer bulb is adjustably mounted in order that the air gap in the magnetic circuit may be varied, additional control of the characteristics and range of the thermometer being obtained by providing on the core auxiliary windings 6, 6a that are short-circuited through an adjustable impedance. Modifications are described in which the additional heating is effected by (i) eddy currents induced directly in the expansion medium of a mercury thermometer, (ii) eddy currents or hysteresis losses produced directly in a metal bulb containing the expansion medium, (iii) eddy currents or hysteresis losses produced directly in a metal sleeve surrounding the the, rmometer bulb, (iv) eddy currents or hysteresis losses produced in a metal sleeve surrounding the thermometer bulb and forming a part of a magnetic circuit energized by the transformer current or a current proportional thereto.
