Abstract

674,002. Uniting metals to ceramic materials. STACKPOLE CARBON CO. Oct. 18, 1949 [Dec. 8, 1948], No. 26727/49. Class 36. [Also in Group XXVII] A method of making a sparking plug comprises applying titanium hydride to predetermined areas of the inner and/or outer surfaces of a tubular ceramic insulator 1 near its inner end and then soldering the centre electrode 9 to the inner surface of the insulator and/or the plug casing 4 to the outer surface of the insulator, depending upon which surface or surfaces has or have been coated with titanium hydride; the plug may embody titanium hydride soldered bonds 16, 17, joining the insulator to both the electrode 9 and casing 4, respectively; the insulator 1 may also have an internal shoulder 3 to which a head 11 on the electrode is joined by the titanium hydride soldered bonds. The insulator 1 has a stepped through bore 2 in which is formed the shoulder 3 that supports the head 11 of the centre electrode 9; the upper bore part contains a suppressor and a coil spring in order to connect the centre electrode to a terminal in the outer end of the insulator. Titanium hydride 16, either in the form of powder or paste is deposited on the surfaces to be joined after which silver or copper based solder or pure silver or copper is then applied to the titanium hydride coatings and the plug is subjected to a temperature of approximately 1000‹ C. to firmly unite the parts so coated. The solder may be mixed with the titanium hydride and the mixture applied in one operation to the several surfaces; the heating is effected in a furnace either filled with hydrogen or in which a vacuum has been created. When hydrogen is used the moisture content of the furnace is reduced to a minimum by use of a drying agent, such as aluminium oxide, and the hydrogen is passed through a palladium catalyst in order to change its oxygen content to water. Different plugs may have different areas of bonding in order to vary the heat transfer from the plug to the engine cylinder block. Specifications 625,371 and 626,992 are referred to.
