Abstract

672,705. Glass manufacture. HOLOPHANE, Ltd., and HOLMES, J. G. May 19, 1950 [May 20, 1949], No. 13549/49. Class 56. [Also in Group V] A trough-like bowl refractor for a tubular lamp is made of glass or other mouldable transparent material by first moulding a closed-sectioned hollow tapering member 1, Fig. 1, with internal longitudinal ribs 2, and then splitting the member longitudinally. The axial withdrawal of the moulding-tool, for the inside of the member, is effected without fouling the ribs, so that bolder ribs 2 may be provided than would be possible if the article were moulded as a trough, and the tool withdrawn at right angles to, the axis. The member is moulded with lines of weakness 5 to facilitate the splitting which, in the case of glass, may be effected by cutting with a diamond or grinding wheel, or by applying a hot wire. Usually two split halves 10, Fig. 3, would be joined end to end but more than two parts may be assembled in line, or, one part only may be used. The bottom of the tapered member 1 may be integrally closed and provided with radiating ribs 4 or the end closures of the trough may be separately applied and may be of metal. The lines of weakness 5 are flanked by flanges 7, any roughnesses being ground off after splitting. The flanges 7 may be used to secure the halves in a lantern, and the flanges 8 may be clipped together.
