672,658. Electricallyheated blades. BOYD, W., KELK, G. F., and CLARKE, J. E. Nov. 15, 1950, No. 28988/50. Class 39(iii) A blade for a compressor of a gas turbine engine is heated for de-icing by a unit comprising electric resistance wires 14 wound on a mica sheet 11 with recessed edges 12 covered by a helical winding 19 of glass threads and a coating of ceramic cement covering the assembly and filling spaces between the winding 19, the whole being encased in a metal structure forming the blade. The winding 19 is a spaced double winding in opposite directions providing rhombic openings, and the mica sheet 11 is perforated at 30. After baking the embedding cement, the element is placed in a mould, into which molten metal is then run to encase the blade. The ends of the resistance wire 14 at opposite ends of the element are spot-welded to lugs 18, which are partly covered by insulating sheaths 20 woven from glass threads. The cement may be an aqueous mixture of one part borax and nine parts of kaolin.
