Abstract

672,229. Shelling oats. DANIELSON, K. R. Dec. 15, 1949 [Dec. 18, 1948], No. 32262/49. Class 58. Oats which have had their moisture content adjusted to 13-19 per cent are shelled by subjecting them to impact against a surface and regulating the impact velocity in relation to the moisture content of the oats in such a manner as to obtain a high' yield of hulled grains with a low proportion of broken kernels. Either or both the velocity and moisture content may be varied. Unhulled grains remaining after the hulling operation are separated from the kernels obtained and subjected to one or more further hulling operations one at least of which is carried out at a lower moisture content or lower impact velocity. As shown the oats are fed into an apparatus via a funnel 6 in which they are flung against the walls of an annulus 1 through tubes 2 rotated by a motor 3 the material falling and discharging through an outlet 9.
