Abstract
Aryltrichlorosilanes and arylmethyldichlorosilanes in which the aryl radical is a phenyl or xenyl radical are prepared by reacting benzene or biphenyl with silicon tetrachloride or methyltrichlorosilane in the presence of silicon at a temperature of from 275 DEG to 500 DEG C. and at a pressure of at least 75 p.s.i. Aluminium chloride or boron trichloride may be employed as a catalyst for the reaction, e.g. in an amount of from 0.1 to 15 mol. per cent based on the total mols. of benzene or biphenyl and silicon tetrachloride or methyltrichlorosilane. The silicon may have a particle size of less than 20 mesh per inch. In the examples phenyltrichlorodiphenyldichloro-, phenylmethyldichloro-p-xenyltrichloro- and m-xenyltrichlorosilanes are prepared.
