A power supply apparatus comprises a transformer 15 having an output winding 18 alternative input windings 16, 24 supplied respectively with interrupted current from a battery 13 via an on-off switch S5, a batterymains switch S4, a run-charge switch S3 and a vibrator 17, and with alternating current at mains supply voltage via the switches S4, S5, provision being made to charge the battery 13 from the winding 16 via a rectifier 26, the vibrator 17 and the three switches when the transformer 15 is mains supplied. The apparatus, which is portable, is shown as embodying a photographic flash tube device. The electrodes 10 of a gas-discharge tube 11 which may be xenon filled are supplied by a main condenser C1 charged to twice the output winding volts by a condenser C2 and rectifiers 19, 20 on closing a switch S1. The tube is triggered by an auxiliary electrode 12 connected to a pulse transformer 24 energized on closing a switch S6 to discharge a condenser C4 charged across a high resistance chain R2. The switch S6 may be fitted to the camera shutter. A neon tube 22 indicates the state of charge of the main condenser C1. The flash tube 11 is connected to the apparatus by a plug and socket connection 21 protected by a device disclosed in Specification 671,984, [Group XXXVI] in which a switch S2 is closed when the plug is withdrawn to discharge the condenser C1 across a resistor R1.
