Abstract

Hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof with oxygenated derivatives are produced by passing a feed gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide in contact with an iron catalyst at about 500-750 DEG F. and superatmospheric pressure effective to consume at least 80 per cent of the carbon monoxide, the total feed gas conforming with the equation: loge(K+50) = -0.1548A-0.1075G-0.001512T+ loge 279.8, where K is less than 15, A is the ratio mols. of H2 to mols. of CO, G is the ratio mols. of CO2 to mols. of CO, and T is the absolute temperature. Net production of CO2 is thus limited to below 15 per cent and CO2 may even be consumed. The water vapour in the feed should be less than 2 mol. per cent. Preferably K is kept below 5, a negative value corresponding to CO2 consumption, the feed comprises about 8-26 mol. per cent CO, A is about 2-6.5, especially 3-5.5, and G is about 1-5, especially 2-4. Maximum yield of hydrocarbons of gasoline range is obtained at 600-650. For example, with iron promoted with alumina and potassium oxide, 625 DEG F. and 200 p.s.i. is suitable. Catalyst may be supported on silica or the like. Tail gas may be recycled, if desired after removal or concentration of constituents. A multistage process with interstage removal of water or hydrocarbons may be used. Examples show the yields and CO2 production or consumption with different ratios of H2, CO, and CO2 in the feed, and different temperatures, using a fluidized iron catalyst of 60-400 mesh.
