Abstract

A mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen with 2-8 per cent by volume of water vapour is contacted with an iron group catalyst under conditions for synthesis of oxygenated products, said products are separated, and unconverted gases are contacted in a second stage with used catalyst from the first under conditions for synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons which are separated. The H2 : CO ratio is about 1 to 2 : 1, preferably 1.8 : 1, the preferred water content 3-5 per cent, and the preferred catalyst iron promoted with 1-8 per cent of alkali compound such as potassium carbonate or fluoride and sintered or pretreated with CO to contain 1-3 per cent carbide carbon. With an iron catalyst, the first stage may operate at 350-600 DEG F., 200-700 pounds per square inch, 2-30 cubic feet gas per pound per hour, with a recycle of 1-2. The second stage conditions may be 550-750 F., 200-500 pounds per square inch and 10-75 cubic feet per pound per hour. The molecular weight of the products may be varied by control of the temperature. Fluidized operation may be used with catalyst of 10-80 micron size.
