A cathode carries zirconium carbide and thorium, preferably on a metal layer which does not react with the carbide, or on an intermediate carbide layer, the metal of which is the same as, or different from, that of the first layer. In the case of two layers, it is possible to use a first layer, the metal of which reacts with zirconium carbide. Thorium may be deposited on the layer of zirconium carbide or produced by dispersion from a carrier.
