Abstract

671,381. Combined air and water heating apparatus. STOCKHILL, E. March 13, 1950 [March 30. 1949], No. 8628/49. Classes 64(i) and 64(iii) Combined air and water heating apparatus in which air is induced to flow through at least one heat exchange unit to be heated therein by combustion gases or hot air rising through the unit from heat generating means, and which includes at least one hot water boiler 17 heated by heat generating means, is characterized in that the heat-exchange unit for heating the air comprises two or more separate flat-sided, hollow, box-like sections 8 spaced apart through which the hot air or combustion gases flow, the arrangement being such that the required air heating capacity of the apparatus may be obtained by varying the number of sections, said sections being so disposed that a plurality of air heating. spaces, e.g. passages 22, 22 a, lie adjacent their side walls. In the form shown the sections 8 are secured to and spaced apart by a plate 9 and an open-ended casing 21. disposed about the sections 8 together with the plate 9, closes the spaces between adjacent sections to define the passages.22, 22a for the air to be heated which is blown by a fan 6 through a filter 5 and through the passages 22, 22a to a plenum chamber 23 or to ducting for distribution to the points required. The sections 8 are provided on their side walls with protuberances or fins 10 to aid the exchange of heat. Dampers, not shown, may be provided in the plenum head or in the ducting to regulate the air. A burner 13 extends into the lower end of each section 8 from a control chamber 14, the combustion products rising. through the respective sections to a common duct 20 leading to a stack 20b. A separate burner 13a is provided in the chamber 14 for heating the boiler 17 and the combustion products from this burner pass through a central flue in the boiler to the duct 20. Alternatively one of the burners 13. may also heat the boiler which is provided with the. usual flow and return connections 17a, 17b. Combustion air is supplied to the burners through openings 15a in the front wall of the chamber 14 which openings may be provided with means to regulate the air supply. The heat source may comprise gas (as shown), solid fuel, electrical or oil-burning apparatus.
