Abstract

671,107. Respiratory appliances. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. April 20, 1950, No. 9723/50. Class 81 (ii). In a regenerating canister containing potassium tetroxide, a catalyst is combined theiewith only in the vicinity of the air inlet, preferably only about one fifth of the total being catalysed. Owing to the reduced rate of oxygen yield by the uncatalysed layers the total is approximately that required in use. In the preferred form of canister, made of copper lined iron, removal of a seal 5 allows two concentric breathing pipes to be attached to the neck 2, the inner exhalation pipe fitting into the mouth 6 of a tube 3 leading to the bottom of the canister. The air then passes through a filter pad 9, a layer 7 of catalysed potassium tetroxide, and through four layers of uncatalysed tetroxide before passing through a second filter pad 13 to the annular outlet and inhalation tube. The various layers are separated by gauze screens 11. U.S.A. Specifications 2,403,981 and 2,405,580 are referred to.
