670,976. Pneumatic gauging apparatus. LARMUTH, L. J., and LARMUTH, A. Jan. 25, 1950 [Feb. 28, 1949], No. 5354/49. Class 106 (ii). [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for controlling the thickness of materials such as thin strips or sheets comprises a nozzle supplied with compressed air at a substantially constant pressure, means for guiding the material past the nozzle in close proximity thereto or past a member having a part movable in accordance with the thickness of the material and in close proximity to the nozzle, and a pressure gauge, for measuring the pressure in the air system in the vicinity of the nozzle, fitted with electric contacts for actuating relay means for adjusting a machine forming the material so as to correct variations in its thickness. The strip g passes between rollers a and b and round a roller c where it is engaged by a roller h carried by a sprung lever. An adjustable screw in the other end of the lever controls the flow of air from a nozzle k, the pressure at the nozzle being indicated by a gauge p. Compressed air is supplied to the nozzle through regulator and restrictor valves m, o at a constant pressure indicated by a gauge n. The pointer of the pressure gauge is arranged to close, at upper and lower limits, adjustable electrical contacts associated with indicator lamps r and relay means p connected in the circuit of a motor f to cause the motor to be driven in one direction or the other when one or the other limit is reached. The motor drives a nut threaded on a shaft d which carries the bearing for the roller a. The spacings between the rollers are thus altered to restore the thickness of the strip to within the set tolerances. If the supply of strip ceases, a roller t engages the roller c and completes a relay circuit to open the motor circuit. The flow from the nozzle k may alternatively be directly controlled by the strip and several nozzles may be provided across the width of the strip.
