Abstract
<PICT:0670743/III/1> Chlorine dioxide is prepared by passing a current of finely divided inert gas or air through a solution of mineral acid other than hydrochloric, equivalent to a sulphuric acid solution of at least 1,200 grams per litre, saturated with metallic chlorate free from chloride ions. The mineral acid must be non-reducing and non-oxidizing under the reaction conditions. The chlorate saturated acid may be sprayed into the top of a packed or empty tower, the inert gas entering at the bottom but contact between liquid and gas is preferably effected by circulating the liquid and gas in counter or concurrent. As shown in the Figure, sulphuric acid of 1,250 grams/litre containing 6.5 grams/litre of sodium chlorate is circulated from the bottom of tower 1, to a reheater 12 and a chlorate saturator 13. A current of air is passed up the tower through a porous plate 3. A fraction of the liquid is withdrawn at 5 and passed to a closed crystallizer 6 and thence via a filter 7 to a vat 8 where the sulphuric acid is made up to strength before rejoining the liquid passing to the reheater 12. Chlorine dioxide is withdrawn at 4. Specification 377,376 is referred to.
