[Also in Groups XIII and XXXV] In a thermal control for a heating element 25, the space between a heat-sensitive cut-out element, such as a bellows or a bimetal strip 11, and its housing 12, e.g. a metal cylinder, which is sealed at one or both ends and is to be placed. in the medium to be heated, is evacuated or filled with a fluid or comminuted solid of less heat conductivity than the medium to be heated to delay the initial action of the cut-out. Furthermore, a screw 26 for adjusting the thermal element is disposed in a plug pin 19. A pilot heater. 30 is connected directly to plug pins 18, 19 while the heater 25 is connected between the pins by way of a supporting arm 20, the bimetal strip 11, contacts 21, a spring leaf 23 (insulated from the arm 20) and a tail 29. The screw 26 varies the pressure between the contacts 21. In use in a coffee percolator, the heaters raise the water temperature to 100‹C., which is maintained for ten minutes because of thedelaying action of the housing 12 and its contents, until the bimetal 11 attains its "breaking" temperature of 95‹C. Then the main heater 25 is. cut out until the bimetal falls to 94‹C. and the circuit is restored. The housing and its contents now being ineffective as a delaying device, the coffee temperature is held at 94‹ to 95‹C. which are the "make" and "break" temperatures of the bimetal 11.
