670,536. Volt-amp. meters. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 4, 1950 [Aug. 10, 1949; Aug. 26, 1949], Nos. 20836/49 and 22283/49. Class 37. In a wattmeter or watt-hour-meter, the current winding is controlled by a transductor so that the meter responds to volt-amps. or volt-amp.-hours irrespective of the power factor of the circuit. As shown for a singlephase circuit, a wattmeter M is connected in a circuit such that its voltage coil 1 is energized by the voltage across a resistor 8 across the supply leads 6, 7, and its current coil 2 is in series with the output windings 4, 5 of a transductor T whose control winding 3 is energized by the rectified current of the secondary of a current transformer 10 connected in one supply lead 6. Thus the reading of the meter M is independent of the power factor of the supply, the phase angle between the currents in the two windings 1, 2 being produced by an inductor 9 in series with the adjustable resistor 8 to give any required phase angle difference. Alternatively the transductor may be associated with the voltage coil instead of the current coil. For an unbalanced 3-phase system, three transductors may be used associated with a 3-phase meter, and for a balanced 3-phase system a 1-phase meter may be used with the windings energized from any two phases, and the transductor control effected by the sum of the separate phase currents.
