Abstract

670,105. Insulation for dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 26, 1949 [May 29, 1948], No. 14126/49. Class 35. The slot conductors for a dynamoelectric machine are insulated by extruded material so disposed about the individual conductors as to provide the appropriate thickness for strand, turn and whole coil insulation, thus avoiding the necessity for applying this insulation at various stages in the winding operation. The conductor may be initially bare or covered and is covered with suitable mouldable plastic, examples of which are given, by passage through a suitable extrusion head. As shown, these conductors are grouped to form layers which in turn may be wound into coils for insertion into slots after further insulation at the top and bottom of the coil has been bonded into position by heated rollers. The coils are formed on mandrels and subsequently shaped to fit the slots in a conventional manner. In a modification several conductors which .have been already insulated by extrusion or wrapping may be given an outer covering by means of extrusion. When the coil is wound, an extruded covering may be given by means of an arc-shaped extrusion head. Specifications 396,354 and 594,481, [Group IV], are referred to.
