A non-tubular fabric is knitted by means of a series of thread carriers 1, moving stepwise across the fabric, always in the same direction and obliquely to the direction 15 of take-off of the fabric, each carrier conveying its individual thread 3-8 to each in succession, of a series of needles 2 arranged in a straight line parallel to the series of thread carriers, the needles simultaneously knitting stitches, each with the appropriate thread, whereafter the carriers with their individual threads are advanced together one step along the needle line whilst the fabric is moved in the direction of the wales, so that each needle in succession draws, first a loop of the thread offered by the first thread carrier, then, through that loop, a loop of the thread offered by the second thread carrier and so on. The needles are carried on an endless conveyer moved step-by-step in timed relation with the stitch-forming operations of the needles. A casting-off comb 17 is provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes circular machine arrangements for plain knitting, rib knitting, or linkslinks knitting, a chain-like thread conveying device, thread tensioning arrangements and a device for cutting lengths of thread suitable for use in the machine producing the non- tubular fabric. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
