Abstract

669,605. Making wire netting. WEAN EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1949 [March 31, 1949], No. 30247/49. Class 83 (iv). Winding and reeling; twisting wires together.-In a machine for making wire netting in which wires are guided to staggered rows of twisting pinions means is provided for forming slack in the mesh wires without affecting the line wires. Wires 8 are fed from banks of spools 6 by a capstan roll 12 to a twisting roll 2 and slack-forming roll 3. The netting is stripped by a roll 4 and fed by rolls 16 to a looper 17 from which it is wound on rolls by a device 5. Twisting. The twisting roll 2 carries longitudinal split plates 21 clamped to the roll and housing slotted twisting pinions 27 rotated by racks 31 actuated by stationary cams. Wire is guided to the pinions by surfaces 37, slots 38 providing passage for line wires. Adjacent radial plates 21 are offset to stagger the pinions and surfaces 37. The side surfaces 72, 73 of the pinion slot are of different inclinations to determine the order in which wires pass into the slot. Slack formation. The roll 3 carries detachable radial blades 50 secured by screw and recess means in sections which provide spaces for line wires and is adjusted by screw and nut means 59 by hand wheels 65. The blades enter between the twister plates 21 and pull excess wire through to allow for twisting. Wire feeding. Wire is tensioned by staggered bars 77 adjusted by screws 78. Each wire passes round the capstan 12 which is continuously rotated from a power shaft. If the capstan overfeeds wire tends to pile up between the bars 77 and the capstan and slackens on the capstan to reduce the feed. The machine is driven by an electromotor through a gear-box with a flexible joint in the drive of the roll 3. In order to provide equal twists between the mesh wires and selvedge wires on each edge it is necessary for the right-hand selvedge wires, viewed in the direction of movement of the mesh, to enter the twister pinion before the mesh wires and the reverse on the left-hand side. To accomplish this the selvedge wire on the left-hand side is passed over pulleys 14, 15 to vary the approach direction and to allow prior entry of the mesh wire in the pinion. Specifications 669,629 and 669,630 are referred to.
