[Also in Group XI] An inductive seam welder comprises a rotatable armature with magnetic poles 14 on its periphery and means for moving the poles 14 in rapid succession past those abutting edges of a work-piece 10 that are to be welded together, the work-piece 10 being slowly moved relatively to the armature such that the poles 14 successively traverse progressive sections along the work-piece 10 to heat and weld the said abutting edges into a seam due to the rapid approach and withdrawal motions of the successive series of magnetic fields. The workpiece may be moved by feed means 12 coupled to the armature through reduction gearing 40 to 49. The poles 14 have windings 15 energized by direct or alternating current and a commutator 31 may be provided such that each pole is energized only when in the vicinity of the work-piece. The armature may be housed in a casing 51 having inlets 52 through which hydrogen may be admitted. The machine is suitable for the seam welding of tubes and although in Fig. 1 the armature is shown revolving in a plane containing the seam of the tube, the armature may revolve in a plane at an angle to such a seam as is shown, for example, in Fig. 7. The tubing may be formed from flattened strips of metal passed through dies or forming rolls 11 whereby the longitudinal edges are brought into abutting, or practically abutting, relation to one another.
