Abstract

Low molecular weight polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride, e.g. putty-like or very soft tacky solids, are made by polymerizing vinyl chloride alone or admixed with another monomer under anhydrous conditions, e.g. in bulk or solution, in the presence of between 0.1 and 20 per cent by weight of hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide and optionally a peroxy or nitrogen-containing polymerization catalyst. The other monomer may be vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methyl and ethyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate, and diethyl maleate and fumarate. The solvents may be isobutyl ether, methylene dichloride, and ethylene dichloride. Catalysts mentioned are benzoyl peroxide, dialkyl peroxides, alpha, alpha1-azodi-isobutyronitrile, and those described in Specifications 618,168, 622,374, 626,155, 631,225, 649,934, 651,163 and 651,315. The polymers may be used as plasticizers, adhesives and fillers for paint and shoe polishes.
