Abstract

669,326. Automatic shuttle-changing mechanism for looms. BUTIN, E. A. Jan. 6, 1949 [Feb. 19, 1948], No. 409/49. Class 142(iii) Shuttles for a loom, which may have a dropbox motion, are stored in upright holders and the lowermost shuttle is carried through 90 degrees by a cradle to the shuttle box upon indication of weft exhaustion. The ends of the shuttles are held in holders 11 by blocks 22. Upon weft exhaustion, a shaft 50 commences to rotate and a cam 55 thereon operates a cable 20 which causes a projection 19 to move a member 13a. Member 13a rotates rods 8a at the back of the holders through links 10a, 12a. Rotation of rods 8a moves blades 28, Fig. 9, and allows the lowest shuttle to fall on to a support 35 where arms 32, 33 grip the shuttle and, on rotation of a shaft 31 controlled by a cam 49 on shaft 50, move the shuttle through 90 degrees and place it in the shuttle box. The projection 19 is rocked continuously by shaft 16 on which it is mounted so as to be in line with lever 13a or 13b according to which shuttle box is in operation at any given instant. When a shuttle has fallen from a holder the lower block 22 turns under the action of a soring and allows the shuttle above to slide down a slot 24, which engages the shuttle tip 26 into the lowest position. Similarly, each shuttle then moves down one position. In a modification, the arms 33 may be replaced by projections on the arms 32 and arms 32 connected to, and move with, the projection 19 so as always to be beneath the holder corresponding to the shuttle in operation. The spent shuttle is ejected into an auxiliary box 60. Specification 644,363 is referred to.
