Abstract
669,128. Forging. WILKINS & MITCHELL, Ltd., and WILKINS, E. W. Aug. 15, 1950 [Aug. 17, 1949], No. 21371/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group V] In a hot forging-press, the space where the work is operated upon is sealed off from the space in which the slide-operating gear is situated to protect the gear from scale. The sealing means may consist of strips of rubber, leather, fabric, &c. disposed between the slide and the inner walls of the press frame, and may be carried either by the slide or by the walls. As shown, sealing strips 24 are secured to brackets 23 on the press walls 1 and bear against the sides of the slide 2. The strips extend across the full width of the front and back of the press, and overlap gibs or guides 3 for the slide, these guides forming seals for the ends of the slide. The guides are V-shaped in section and are'secured to the side walls of the press, shims 15 being interposed to allow for inward adjustment of the guides as wear takes place. The slide is reciprocated through connection rods 4 by two eccentrics 5 on shafts 6 driven by spurwheels 7 from common pinions 8 on a first motion shaft 9 driven by a friction clutch at one end and having a brake at the other end. There are two spur-wheels 7 for each eccentric, one on each side of it, and there are two pinions 8, whereby a balanced drive is obtained. The underside of the slide 2 has secured thereto an upper tool carrier 16 having guide bosses 17 which work upon dowels 18 fixed to a bolster 19 which serves as a bottom tool carrier. The bolster is supported by a wedge-plate 20.
