Abstract
In a distillation system wherein distillate collects in a container 41, Fig. 7, the <PICT:0669099/III/1> <PICT:0669099/III/2> removal of non-condensible gases contaminating the distilled vapour is controlled by a valve 411 subjected to the partial pressure of these gases. The gases plus some uncondensed vapour passing the valve enter a rectifier 40 wherein the vapour condenses and the gases pass into a chamber 43 containing a float supported by the condensate and operating a valve. The gases depress the liquid level in the rectifier 40 and the chamber 43 to open the float valve and pass into a pipe 42 leading to atmosphere or to other condensers operating at lower temperatures whereby a number of fractions may be collected from the distillate. The valve 411 comprises a vessel 419, Fig. 8, movable relatively to pipes 417, 418 respectively leading to and from the rectifier, and supported by a sealed bellows 426 containing a small quantity of distillate. Condensate from the rectifier overflows the vessel 419 and returns to the container 41 via a pipe 416. The condensate retained in the valve body 412 wets the exterior of the bellows whereby the vapour pressures on the inside and outside thereof are equal, and the vessel closes the pipe 417. The partial pressure of any non-condensible gas therefore moves the vessel to uncover the end of the pipe 417 to admit the gas to the rectifier.
