Abstract

Aliphatic conjugated diolefines such as butadiene, isoprene, or 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, and monovinyl aromatic compounds such as styrene, o-chlorostyrene, p-chlorostyrene, o-ethyl styrene, m-ethyl styrene, or p-isopropyl styrene are polymerized, or copolymerized in the presence or absence of other polymerizable compounds such as vinyl acetate, by heating at 50 DEG to 150 DEG C. in an aqueous emulsion of a pH of 1.5 to 3 in the presence of a peroxy catalyst and 0.01 to 500 parts of iron in the form of an iron salt per million parts of monomeric material. Peroxy catalysts specified are hydrogen, sodium and barium peroxides, ammonium, sodium and potassium persulphates, and peracetic acid; iron salts specified are ferric nitrate, sulphate, chloride and acetate, and ferrous chloride and sulphate. Emulsifying agents specified are the sodium salt of sulphonated sperm oil, the alkali metal sulphonates of aliphatic and alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight, and egg albumen. The molecular weights of the polymers may be controlled by variations in the proportions of iron employed, preferably to produce polymers of low molecular weight.
