[Also in Group V] Rods or tubes of glass are drawn out of a rotary pot in a vertical direction, the rod or tube being diverted, by mechanical means, preferably at right angles, so that the drawing proceeds in a horizontal plane. As shown, the pot 4 is fed by a channel 2 from the furnace 1 and the tube is formed by drawing upwardly glass which is subject to an air blast from a pipe 9. At a position where the tube may be bent without distortion of its section, e.g. from 3 to 6 feet above the pot, a diverting roller 16 is provided, the roller 16 having a peripheral groove corresponding to the section of the tube and working with a similarly grooved spring-pressed guide roller 18. The roller 16 is cooled by dipping in a water bath 17. The horizontal drawing is effected by endless bands 22, the tube being passed through a cooler 20 and over supporting rollers 24. Lengths of tube are cut off at 25 and are deposited in a container 26. A protective screen 10 around the drawing position dips into the fluid glass and is kept rotating with the pot by a gear wheel 11 meshing with a toothed flange 12. A cooler 13 is provided with inlet and outlet pipes 14, 15 for water. In a modification, the glass gravitates through a hole in the bottom of the pot and its course is diverted by a pair of rollers similar to the rollers 16, 18.
