668,892. Electric analogue calculating systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 18, 1950 [Nov. 15, 1949], No. 29245/49. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (b)] In apparatus for integrating a function, e.g. voltage, recurrent trains of electrical impulses are produced by causing a light-spot to perform successive sweeps across a graticule G, Fig. 2, in front of a photo-electric cell PE, the effective lengths of the light sweeps and thus the number of impulses in a train are varied according to the amplitude of the function, and the total number of impulses produced is counted. As shown in Fig. 2, a mask M moved according to the values of the function varies the effective length of the sweep of a C.R.T. screen. The cell PE is connected to a counting circuit through an amplifier A. The mask may be fixed to a pointer which follows the curve of the function, thus obtaining the area under the curve, or to a slider arm SL, Fig. 3, which is moved by a servomotor S so that the voltage produced by a potentiometer T balances a voltage to be integrated applied to terminals V, V<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, a square waveform whose length depends on the values of the function is applied to the control grid of the C.R.T. to vary the period of illumination of the screen.
