Abstract

The invention comprises 4-amino-2-hydroxybenzene-1,5-dicarboxylic acid, and a method of preparation by treating with heat, carbon dioxide and a carbonate a compound of the general formula <FORM:0668674/IV (b)/1> in which the hydrogen atom in the p-position to the hydroxy or amino group has been replaced by the carboxyl group, or a salt of the same compound. The reaction may be carried out in an aqueous medium and/or under pressure. Suitable carbonates are alkali or alkaline earth bicarbonates, e.g. potassium bicarbonate. The above compound may also be prepared by introducing formyl groups into the above starting materials and oxidizing the formyl groups to carboxyl groups. The 4 - amino - 2 - hydroxybenzene 1,5 - dicarboxylic acid can be isolated in the form of its salt, e.g. the sodium or calcium salt or a salt with an organic base.
