Abstract

668,628. Centrifugal machines ; washing granular materials. TEDMAN, D. June 10, 1949 [Nov. 29, 1948], No. 30948/48. Classes 23 and 82(ii) Solid particles of different specific gravities or sizes are separated by centrifugal action by introducing a fluid containing such particles tangentially into a helical space confined both circumferentially and axially and communicating with a central axial space having one or more axial outlets, causing the suspension to flow along said helical space to develop forces for separating the particles both axially and radially, utilizing the radial force to drive the particles towards the periphery of the helical space, continuously removing the particles of high specific gravity or large size from the helical space, and utilizing the axial force to remove the particles of relatively low specific gravity or of relatively small size on entering said central axial space. The separating apparatus comprises annular tubular members 7, 8, joined by a tubular helix 9, each turn of which has a circumferential opening on the inner face. Inlet tubes 16-23, 25, delivering tangentially, are sealed into the convolutions of the helix and a similar tube 24 in the members 7. Oppositely disposed tubes are constricted as at 28. The suspension is forced into the helix through some of the tubes 16-23, near its centre, plain water being forced through the other tubes, the fluid pressure increasing progressively from one end to the other. Alternatively, the suspension may be fed through the tubes 22, 23 and water through 16, 17, 24 and 25 or through 16-21 and 24, 25. Heavier material is discharged at one end, lighter at the other, or heavier material may be discharged through 26. Instead of using a suspension in a liquid, the materials to be sparated may be forced into the apparatus as a dry powder in an air-stream.
