A clothes-washing machine provided with a receptacle and having water inlet means 18, comprises a combined soap container and water conduit 10 fixed relatively to the receptacle through which the same may be filled to a desired level, a chamber 15 of relatively large floor area and depth and a U-trap 16 communicating between the chamber and the receptacle means 21 accessible externally of the washing- machine to receive soap powder or the like and deposit the same within the chamber 15 remote from the entrance to the trap; and a pair of spouts 7, 8 for discharging water into the chamber for passage through the trap into the receptacle, one of the spouts 7 reaching over the pile of deposited soap powder 25 to discharge substantially directly into the trap with minimum pick-up of soap powder and the second discharging into the soap pile 25 to create a turbulent mixture of soap and water for passage into the receptacle. In the arrangement shown, as applied to a washing-machine of the type disclosed in Specification 636,104, the combined soap and water conduit 10 is of moulded rubber or the like and is mounted directly on the wall of the receptacle. Water is discharged from either or both cold and hot water spouts 7, 8 by solenoid-controlled valves 3, 4 respectively. The hot water spout 8 is formed with a flat nozzle portion to direct water over the width of the chamber 15 and both spouts are above the maximum overflow level of the chamber. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which water is introduced into a basket within the machine the inlet 18 is extended over the rim of the basket by means of a suitable nozzle fixed to the wall of the receptacle.
