Abstract

<PICT:0668601/III/1> In neutralizing and drying crystalline or granular substances, e.g. ammonium sulphate or sodium sulphate, the substance is freed from most of its moisture, say 1-3 per cent content, in a centrifuge 1 and is sprayed in the centrifuge with a predetermined quantity, e.g. two gallons per four cwt., of water from tank 2 through rose 4 to wash away most of the free acid without dissolving the substance itself. The crystals are discharged through a hopper into a vertical cylinder 6 and are subjected to the action of a solid or gaseous neutralizing agent, e.g. ammonia entering at 7 or ammonium carbonate or sodium carbonate added through the hopper. The crystals are fed by turntable feeder 8 driven by motor 9 to the bottom of an air elevator 12 and are lifted by gases withdrawn from cylinder 6 by fan 14 heated at 15. The crystals pass from expansion chamber 16, while gases are withdrawn through metal screen 17, down cataract tower 18 having baffles 19 against a stream of hot air from fan 20 and heater 21. The dried salt is stored in container 22 before being weighed and bagged at 23. The air for the elevator and cataract tower may be supplied by the same fan.
