Abstract

668,388. Fluid-actuated valves. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, and DUNCAN, W. O. (Bendix Aviation Corporation). March 9, 1949, No. 6384/49. Addition to 611,619. Class 135 [Also in Group XXXIV] In the pressure regulating valve of the parent Specification for the operation of vehicle brakes, the piston 20 associated with the exhaust valve element and subjected to the pressure in the motor port in opposition to the pressure applied by the actuating member is replaced by a two-part piston member comprising a plunger 38 slidable in and resiliently connected to an annular piston member 34 by a spring 44, so that in the low pressure stage of operation of the valve the pressure in the motor port acts on both the piston 34 and the plunger 38 whilst in the high pressure stage the pressure acts on the plunger only. On anticlockwise movement of the operating member 88 a loading spring 66 is compressed to move the' piston 34 and, through the spring 44, the plunger 38 to seat on the exhaust valve 62 to cut communication between the brake cylinder 17 and the reservoir 19. On further anticlockwise movement the inlet valve 28 is unseated to supply the brake cylinder with pressure liquid from the pump 15. With the inlet valve open and the line pressure less than a value determined by the spring 44, both piston and plunger resist this pressure and due to the relatively large area thereof a close control can be kept by the operator. On the line pressure exceeding that of the spring 44 the piston 34 moves to the left into abutment with a shoulder 56 whence the line pressure is then resisted only by the plunger 38 and the force required by the operator to increase the line pressure is not so great as it would otherwise have been when acting over the whole area. When the operator releases the member 88 the line pressure with the assistance of a return spring 82 and the inlet valve spring 30 returns the valves, the piston and plunger to the pistons shown. The spring 44 is. made strong enough to resist low line pressures whilst at the same time being stronger than the force required to open the inlet valve.
