Abstract

667,927. Transformers; protective arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 19, 1950 [June 30, 1949], No. 15274/50. Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv). A stationary electric induction device, such as an autotrans. former, has a first and a second winding section, the first winding section 1-3 having a terminal 3 physically adjacent a terminal 4 of the second winding section 4-6, the two sections being connected by a conductor between an intermediate point 2 on the first section and the terminal 4 of the second section, a protective arrangement comprising a resistor R having a negative resistancevoltage characteristic being connected between the terminal 3 and an intermediate point 5 on the second section, the point 5 being so positioned that the potential difference between 2-3 is normally substantially equal to that between 4-5. Any excessive potential difference between the terminals 3, 4 due to an abnormal condition, such as a stroke of lightning hitting a line connected to the terminal 1, is thus prevented since the resistance of the element R would fall to provide a low resistance path between the points 3, 5. Specification 292,110, [Class 38 (ii)], is referred to.
