Abstract

The presence of ketones in body fluids, e.g. urine is detected or estimated by a colour change in a composition comprising a soluble nitroprusside, e.g. an alkali metal nitroprusside, an aliphatic amino acid, e.g. glycine, alamine, glutamic acid, arginine, asportic acid or lysine, an alkaline material, e.g. disodium, dipotassium or trisodium phosphate, or alkaline carbonates or hydroxides and mixtures thereof, and a sugar, e.g. lactose, dextrose or sucrose. The use of a separate alkaline material may be obviated by employing an alkaline salt of the amino acid, e.g. sodium or potassium glycinate. The composition may be tabletted with the addition of sodium borate, corn starch and magnesium stearate. Specification 651,448 is referred to.
