Abstract

A porous granular oxidation agent, capable of substantially completely oxidizing carbon monoxide at normal temperatures (0 DEG -60 DEG C.) and at humidities of up to 100 per cent, comprises a mixture of silver permanganate and a solid inorganic oxide of a solid element in which the silver permanganate is dispersed in finely-divided form upon and throughout the oxide by being formed in the presence of the oxide by reaction between a soluble silver salt and an alkali metal permanganate, the oxide having no more than a low solubility in water and, in the presence of water, being substantially unreactive with the silver salt employed. Suitable oxides are ZnO, Fe2O3, MoO3, Co2O3, TiO2, chrysotile asbestos, CuO, MnO2, CeO2, Sb2O3, NiO, SnO2, Pb3O4, powdered silica gel, ZrO2, CdO, V2O5, Al2O3, talc, kaolin, and kiesel guhr. When using kaolin or kieselguhr, a water content of 8-11 per cent in the final product is preferred; with the other oxides the water content should not exceed 2 per cent. Optimum activity in the oxidation of carbon monoxide is shown by products containing 60-75 mole per cent ZnO, 67-80 mole per cent CuO, 50-70 mole per cent MoO3, 33-50 mole per cent Sb2O3, and 33-50 mole per cent Pb3O4. Examples describe the preparation of agents by mixing a solution of potassium permanganate with a paste formed from zinc oxide and silver nitrate solution, or by mixing silver nitrate solution with a paste formed from zinc oxide and potassium permanganate solution. The product is cooled to 0-5 DEG C. filtered, pressed at 5-10 tons per square inch cured for 7-28 days, granulated, and dried. The agents may be used in respirator canisters or as indicator agents in conjunction with a multithermocouple cell and an e.m.f. measuring apparatus for the determination of carbon monoxide in air. Tests are described showing the effect on the breakdown time of the agents of variations in the curing time and the pressure used in the preparations, and also showing the relation between breakdown time and the initial concentration of carbon monoxide in the gas treated, the rate of flow, temperature and humidity of the gas, the dimensions of the bed of agent, and the granule size. The agents will effect the oxidation of carbon monoxide in atmospheres not containing oxygen. The Specification refers to the prior use of a composition containing silver permanganate, calcium oxide, and calcium chloride.
