Class 23 In a centrifugal filter for separating fine particles from liquids comprising a rotatable bowl 10 having a helical conveyer 18 therein which rotates at a different rate from the bowl, the inner wall of the bowl has anchorage means such as strips 51 to retain a predetermined depth of particles thereon and the blades 36 forming the working surfaces of the conveyer are smooth to prevent adherence of the particles thereto. The bowl 20 is geared to a belt-driven sheave 31 and the conveyer is driven by a motor 37. As shown, the bowl comprises cylindrical sections 20a, 20c with a frusto-conical section 20b therebetween and the conveyer comprises cylindrical parts 39, 40 and a conical baffle 41. The slurry enters through a pipe 16, is deflected by the baffle 41 and passes into the bowl through ports having inserts 42. The ports are disposed in a curved path about the part 39. The strips 51 are formed by grooves, cast integral with the bowl or welded thereto. The strips are rectangular in cross-section and of a height approximating to that of the largest particles. The particles are carried along' the bowl and discharged to a chamber 43 whilst the liquid flows over a weir 45 to a chamber 44. In a modification the filter has a cylindrical bowl with non-co-extending strips, a disc shaped baffle and conveyer blades which get progressively smaller and helically configurated towards the chamber 43. In a further modification the bowl is conical.
