Abstract
667,581. Automatic couplings for vehicles. NATIONAL MALLEABLE & STEEL CASTINGS CO. Jan. 3, 1950 [March 2, 1949], No. 116/50. Class 103(v). A knuckle 10 for a car coupler having a vertically positioned hcle for receiving a pivot pin 12 for connecting the knuckle to a coupler head 11 and having also a forward portion 13 on one side of the hole, a rearward tail portion 14 on the opposite side of the hole, and a pad 32 on its underside adjacent the knuckle pin hole, the preponderance of the weight of the knuckle being contained in the tail portion and tending to tilt the knuckle, is characterised in that the said pad extends rearwardly by an amount sufficient that it is disposed beneath the centre of gravity G of the knuckle so as to maintain the knuckle in an upright position, the pad forming the sole support for the knuckle. The pad 32 co-operates with a seat 33 on the coupler head 11 and prevents contact of the pulling lug 28 with the floor 29 and the consequent increase in the frictional resistance to opening of the knuckle 10. The pad is disposed eccentrically of the hole for the pin 12 the greater part of its area being on the tail side of the hole.
