Abstract
667,527. Gear pumps. ABBEY, A. (Dow Chemical Co.). April 21, 1950. No. 9904/50. Class 110(ii). [Also in Group V] A pump has rotors 12 each formed of a number of toothed discs arranged as shown and is intended primarily for feeding molten organic plastic material from an inlet 13 to an outlet 14 between adjustable jaws 27. A filter 22 and strainer plate 23 are provided. Heating jackets 28, 29 are arranged as shown. The teeth may form a helix on the rotor or may be arranged in " herring-bone" " fashion. The material is fed in under pressure and may be supplied by a meshing-screw pump. A groove 16 extends for the whole length of the rotors which are thus supplied from the inlet and the delivery channels 26, 14 also extend for the full length of the rotors. There is little, if any, undercut in each groove between two teeth. External gears couple the rotors together. A spring-loaded relief valve allows a continuous, small discharge from the groove 16 to show that adequate pressure is being maintained on the supply. Extruded strips of other than rectangular crosssection may be produced at 14 by suitably designing the outlet shape. The rotors may also be heated, using electrical means. Bearings 30 are lubricated by the material being pumped, there being a flow under pressure from the pumping chamber. Dimensions of one pump, and its rotor speed, are given in the Specification.
