In a steering gear a helical cam 1 operates a rocker shaft 5 by means of two conical or curved followers 7, 8, which are fixed or rotatable on a beam 10 pivoted at 11 to a rocker arm 6. The movement of the beam 10 is controlled by a fixed cam 12, preferably through the stubs 13, 14, of the followers 7, 8. The cam surface may be designed to give any required path for the followers. As shown, the operative follower is moved parallel to the axis of the cam 1 over the whole steering range, the rocking of the beam 10 holding the inoperative follower clear of the cam 1. The effective length of the rocker arm is thus increased as the followers approach their extreme positions. A single cam surface 12 may be used and stops provided for the pivot 11. The paths of the two followers may be controlled independently. It is stated that the cam 1 may operate two rocker shafts.
