Abstract

666,754. Surface grinding. WETTERN, E. F., and SPEED SURFACERS, Ltd. Nov. 2, 1950 [Nov. 4, 1949], No. 28311/49. Class 60. In a surface grinding machine for the treatment of granite, marble, glass and similar materials and of the kind having a radial arm x to support a series of driven satellite cutter blocks 45 mounted on a head and at equal radii from a driving shaft 2, the head is mounted with spherical bearings upon a spherical boss on the shaft and is provided with clearances above the bearings to allow the head to oscillate and align the cutters with the workpiece surface. The head may be raised or lowered with respect to the arm x by means of levers 13 connected to trunnions 12 on a cover 10 freely mounted on the shaft 2 between thrust bearings 9 and 24. The levers have a handle 14 by means of which the head can be manipulated over the surface of the work and are pivotally supported from the radially mobile arm x by links 18, an adjustable counterweight 20 being provided. The shaft 2, which is axially displaceable in a bearing 1, is slidably keyed to a driving pulley 3 and at its lower end is formed with a spherical portion 50 and a driving dog plate 51 of rectangular shape to engage a corresponding recess in a member 52 recessed to a rotatable part 34 of the head. This member 52 and a split cup ring 53 form the spherical bearings which permit the head to oscillate. The cutters 45 are secured by a mastic composition 46 and holding blocks 44 to the screw-threaded ends of inclined shafts 37 which are driven by pinions 7 in engagement with a rotationary spur ring 31 which is supported on ball and roller' bearings from the rotating part 34 of the head. The spur ring is secured by bolts 29 to a cover plate 17 connected by springs with the cover 10. A resilient sealing ring 26 is interposed between the covers 10 and 17. Fluid supplied through a bore in the shaft 2 is distributed to the cutters by a plate 55 secured to the member 52.
