666,686. Screw conveyers. BAUGHAN, H. P. Jan. 31, 1948. [Aug. 7. 1947] No. 21490/47. Class 78 (i). An axially reciprocating mechanism, for conveying solid material along a channel C, comprises a propelling screw or helix F and means G for positively moving said screw or helix axially along the channel in one direction substantially without rotation in order to feed a charge of the material and for rotating the member whilst positively moving it in the other direction, the direction of rotation being such as to "unscrew" the member from the charge. Figs. 1, 2. Coal is fed from hopper A to fire grate D along conduit C by spiral F which, together with pusher E, is fixed on its shaft, which shaft is journalled in bearing J and is fixed to driving shaft G formed with a groove of the same pitch as the spiral F. In groove K slides the projection N of inner clutch member R, the outer clutch member M of which is secured to fixed frame B and rollers L roll between the two clutch members. When the driving shaft G and screw F axially are advanced the inner clutch member is caused to rotate clockwise but no rotation of the shaft and screw occurs. When the said shaft and screw are axially retracted are the rollers L and inner clutch member K are jammed and the shaft and screw are caused by the projection N working in the groove to rotate clockwise. An additional one-way clutch may be included consisting of an inner member R secured to the shaft, an outer member S having a projection T working in a straight groove in groove P, and rollers between. These are arranged to prevent rotation of the screw when it advances and to permit rotation of the screw when it retracts. The screw shaft may be integral with the driving shaft G, the ram E may be omitted; the screw need have no shaft, and its pitch may be different from that of the groove G so as to move the fuel on the backward stroke.
